Musings on a Friday

I really should check my e-mail more often…

I go t an e-mail from Eric Hansen reminding me of a contest that Monster.com is putting on right now in partenership with the NFL:

Hello Editor,

I’m reaching out on behalf of Monster.com to share some info about a unique contest involving a special job with the NFL. I thought Big Daddy Cool’s readers might enjoy a bit of fun news amidst everyday job challenges and economic reports that seem to worsen each day.

In a nod to cubicle daydreams everywhere, Monster.com launched the kick-off of an unprecedented NFL Director of Fandemonium search contest. The search is underway, with Monster accepting applications into a pool that will be narrowed down to 32 candidates who will vie for this once-in-a-lifetime position; a role that will offer a signing bonus of $100,000 and unique roles in the 2009 NFL Draft, 2009 NFL Kickoff and Super Bowl XLIV.

Fans can apply at nfl.monster.com – but time is running out as the entry deadline is 2/15/09!

Please let me know if you’re interested in more information. Any feedback is appreciated!

Cheers,
Eric Hansen

*M80 encourages full transparency; please feel free to disclose that M80 contacted you on behalf of the new Monster.com.

Okay Eric, and thanks for the reminder I went and signed up for the contest. Some of the perks that the Grand Prize Winner will receive includes:

* Announcing a pick at the 2009 NFL Draft.
* A $100,000.00 “Signing Bonus”.
* Select a play at the 2009 Pro Bowl.
* Get 2 tickets to your favorite teams 2009 games.
* Join the Coin Toss Ceremony at Super Bowl XLIV.
* Act as a Backstage Talent Wrangler at the 2009 NFL Kickoff.
* Participate at Player introductions at the 2009 International Series Game.
* Monitor Player Uniforms On-Field before a 2009 Wild-Card Game.

The prize promotion is not an offer of employment. But hey, $100,000.00 and the other perks are not bad either.

Ok, I get that there are some people out there who are upset with Nadya Suleman right now because they think that she is being selfish and greedy. Who’s she? She’s the unemployed, unmarried woman in SoCal who just gave birth to Octuplets who is some quarters is being reffered to as “Octopussy”. (Ouch!) I get that some people out there are even angry with her because of the choice she made given her situation…

…but someone out there explain to me just what death threats are supposed to accomplish other than make you look like a totally unreasonable idiot?

It’s not jut her that they are threatening either. There are now reports that not only has she gotten death thhreats, but people have actually threatened to kill her children – not just the six she already had but all of her children, including the newborns!!!

Now I ask you, what kind of sick, perverted mind would threaten to do harm to newborns? What would possess someone to threaten to go “Andrea Yates” on someone elses’ children just because you don’t like their lifestyle chioce? And how is that supposed to make you superior to them or anyone else?

Being upset with her is one thing, but threatening to take your feelings out on her innocent children who had no say in the matter, no matter if your threat is credible or not, doesn’t make you a hero, or right, or even one of God’s Holy Warriors if that’s your thinking…

…it just makes you an idiot.

If you want an indication of how well the economy is doing right now or in the future, watch NASCAR.

No, I’m not kidding.

More specifically, look at the grandstands at NASCAR events, especially after this weekend in Daytona. Most attendies at NASCAR events are the blue-collar workers that Conservative Republicans in Congress and on talk radio have expressed such a distain for. They are the NASCAR base that helps the sport thrive and if they have confidence that things are getting better, then they are going to be filling the stands in places like Bristol, Talledega, Martinsville and Dover. However if the economy is still not doing well and NASCAR is struggling to fill up places like Fontana, Atlanta, Texas and Pheonix, then the economy hasn’t started making it’s way back yet.

Start this weekend with the Daytona 500. Well actually, that may not be a good indicator because Daytona is like the Super Bowl, everybody is going to try to be there. But next week when they’re in Fontana, California for the Auto Club 500, then we should get a pretty good indicator of how confident people are and how the economy is doing. Fontana has traditionally been a tough sell for race fans because, well, it’s SoCal. I mean these are the same people who leave Dodger games during the seventh inning stretch to beat the traffic for cryin’ out loud!

I’ll bottom line this for you – the people who have been hit hardest by the economy has been the blue-collar worker. Screw those idiots on Wall Street who wasted all our money and our good will. If you want to see who and what America is all about then look at someone who does a Dirty Job. It doesn’t matter if they are a plumber, if they re-pave roads, if they are an exterminator or if they are your auto mechanic – they are what keeps this country functioning – not the white-collar crooks making excuses on why they deserve those multi-million dollar bonuses to Congress.

In fact I have a challenge to all of you Conservatives out there since you seem to hate blue-collar workers and their families so much that you don’t want them to earn a living – if you find that your toilet has backed up, or you have a burst pipe, or if you are having trouble with that $250,000 piece of German shit that you drive since you’re too good to buy American, word of advice – TRY FIXING IT YOURSELF!!!!! Grab a wrench or a screwdriver and see if you can repair it yourself Mr. “I’m too good for anything made in America which is why I buy $10,000 Italian suits.” Fix it yourself since you think we’re all worthless!!!

But just in case you change your mind and decide that you don’t want to ruin that nice, new silk suit or you’ve managed to make things worse, then give us blue-collar workers a call…

…we’re in Daytona all weekend.
