Wow! If any of you out there didn’t get choked up when Henrietta Hughes told her story to President Obama today, then I’m sorry but you have no heart.
That right there is what the Republicans in Congress just don’t seem to get – people out here are HURTING!!!!!!!
You have people out here who are trying to get by with no jobs, or with a part-time job like Julio working at McDonalds while he’s going to school. You have families out there wondering where their next meal is coming from or even if they will be allowed to wake up in their house the next morning. You have lines around the block and up the street of people who are looking for jobs – ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!!!!!!
You have people out here who are doing everything they can, going anyplace they have enough gas to get to, talking to anyone who might know if someone’s hiring, just to get a job. And what are you lamebrains doing?
SAY WHAT?!?!? IS HE FREAKING KIDDING?!?!? HIRING SOMEONE TO DO WORK IS NOT THE SAME AS GIVING THEM A JOB?!?!?
He needs to come out here among all of the people who are unemployed right now and explain that rationale to us. He needs to look in the eye of someone who has just been laid off and tell them that they shouldn’t be concerned because they didn’t really have a job to begin with!!!
A job is something that a business owner creates, it’s going to be long term.
I love Steponopolis though: “So a job doesn’t count if it’s a government job?”
That is a contract. It ends at a certain point, George. You know that. These road projects that we are talking about have an end point.
Yeah, until they get to the last one and they are told that once they are done there they now have to go fix all of the potholes that have been created at the first job. See Mr. Steele there is this little thing called “maintenance”, you might want to pry your nose out of that GOP Manifesto that you have been so enthralled with and actually take the time to look that word up in an actual dictionary!!!
And the inference that private sector jobs don’t have and end-point and that when they go away they always come back is a joke, right? He needs to tell that to the 2.6 million of us who lost their jobs since Labor Day that we shouldn’t worry, that the jobs will come back.
Let me ask any of you out there who has had their private sector job “go away” a little question…
Has it come back yet?
I was downsized by the Qual-Pro Corporation on December 4th, 2002, the day after my 36th birthday, and I’m still waiting for them to call telling me to come back. Just how long am I supposed to wait?!?!?
Well, that’s the agony, now for the ecstasy…
If there is ever a time when you are looking for work that you need some inspiration there are several things you can do. You can look to a book, you can listen to someone tell you a story, you can watch “The Secret”, you can re-read the blog entry about Brian Hoyt…
Or you can watch a Special Olympian on the field of competition.
Right now here in Boise The World Winter Special Olympics are in town for this week only. The Opening Ceremonies were on the 7th and the Closing Ceremonies are on the 13th. There are nearly 2,000 Special Olympians here from 95 countries competing in events like Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Figure Skating. Floor Hockey, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing and Speed Skating.
And Boise has gone wild for the Games. There are Blue and White scarves all over the city. (We’ll put the Blue and Orange away – for now.) They mark men, women and children who are either participants, supporters or simply fans of the Games. The World Winter Games Organizing Committee wanted to give athletes a special gift for the games. They sent the word out all over the world for people to either donate scarves or yarn to make them. Games officials had hoped for 5,000 scarves. Huh, yeah right. TRY 55,000!!!!
And counting…
There is no paid admission to get into the events, anyone can attend them for free. Which in this economy is nice to hear. You get to go out have a nice day and watch some inspiring people do what some people out there might consider to be impossible.
No, it’s not.
If there is one thing we have all learned by watching the Olympics on TV, no matter if it’s summer or winter there is one fundamental truth…
There is no such thing as impossible.
Remember that the next time you look in your local fishwrap, or log in to CareerBuilder, or start getting ready for that job interview…
There is no such thing as impossible…
