Now I can imagine that a lot of you out there are scared right now that you might not get help from the new stimulus bill, that you’re going to be left by the wayside again like so many times before. In this economy that’s a legitimate fear. Nowadays too many HR Directors see unemployment, underemployment and under-utilization as a reason not to hire someone who is immanently qualified and can do the job. They want someone who is either employed currently or they want someone who has only been out of work a short period of time (or so it seems). This makes the job search that much more difficult when you have all of these perceived barriers in front of you and your friends and family keep asking what your problem is and “why don’t you want to work?”
Or is that just me?
Anyway, one of my in-laws turned me onto something the other day. One of her friends’ was in the unemployed raft but was able to find a temporary job with – are you ready for this – the 2010 Census.
No, I’m not kidding.
Apparently the Census is looking for people to go out into the field and work at their local offices. Most of the work involves going door-to-door and interviewing people with a laptop recording their responses. Some salesmanship might have to be involved because some people are reluctant to talk to someone who comes to their door. Most of the time they think it’s a scam, or that their information will be used to sell them something later, or they just don’t like people coming to their door asking a lot of dumb questions that are none of their business to begin with.
Or is that just my neighborhood?
In any case there is a website you can go to so that you can get more information about how to apply. Just go to www.2010censusjobs.govand look around. Or you can call 1-866-861-2010 to schedule an appointment to take the employment test.
Wait a minute, there’s a test?!?!?Yeah, there’s a basic math and grammar test. From what I understand it’s not very long and doesn’t take too much time. In fact there is a sample test that you can download at this page. When you go to take your test you’re going to need an application, and a W-9 form which can both be found on that download page.
There should be a lot of positions still open and the work should last for a few months if not longer.
Not bad for government work, huh?
